I noticed today that I’ve crossed 1,000 miles (swimming, biking, and running) since December. It seemed like a big milestone and a good reason for a post. I’ve been logging my miles with my tri club along with countless other folks across the country who are competing in the USAT National Challenge Competition.
The National Challenge Competition (NCC) is designed to get triathletes excited about off-season training at the club level. Tri Clubs across the country go head-to-head to see who can log the most training miles during the competition. Everyday I send my miles to our coordinator and she enters them into the system and last I checked, our little club (in comparison) is ranked 6th in the nation! Pretty great, especially considering the winter weather we have to deal with here.
Speaking of winter weather… this morning I woke up to a beautiful winter-wonderland… in March. Seriously we got more snow last night than we’ve had ALL winter… and the most snow in DC for the past 8 years. Apparently, we got a nice lil Nor’Easter to welcome in the month of Spring. Awesome. Monday is typically recovery run + swim day… but with all the pools closed and unshoveled sidewalks, my workouts had to be rearranged.
I’m lucky enough that my job can easily be done from home, so the rest of my co-workers declared today a WFH day. I waited to do my short recovery run until later in the day, but still the snow was too much of an issue to run outdoors. It had to be done on the dreaded treadmill. Luckily, I’ve only had to do one other run on the “hamster-wheel” throughout this winter, so I was able to suffer through it.
Amazing how just a short run on that thing feels like an eternity, but when I get outside I can get lost in the miles… completely lost in even the idea of miles. It’s strange, you go through the motions: you cover some ground in a session, then that session’s over and you begin to think about the net one. I never sit back and look at the big picture. 1,000 miles? That’s pretty major. I essentially ran, biked, and swam the distance to my home in Florida. With airfare prices the way they are, I may consider my legs my new mode of transportation for my next trip home… on second thought, let’s not be hasty :)
Tomorrow’s gonna be a long day– gotta run, bike, then make up today’s swim… good thing I thrive on long days :)
