Gettin Ready

So, good news, my friend Jeremy (PT, swim coach extraordinaire, trainer for the National swim team, veteran cyclist/triathlete, etc ) is lending his client/good friend his race wheels for Rhode Island and asked this guy if he would let me use his 808’s for the race… yay! so, now I’m canceling my rented wheels and getting to use some for free! He’s gonna let me pick them up tonight so I can do tomorrow’s ride with them and try them out. yay! super exciting.

Last big training weekend before the big race. I’m amped to get out there and get in a good trial run before the real thing. I’m using my saturday brick (bike + run) to really test my nutrition plan and make sure I’ve got a solid plan that I can be confident in. It’s funny how training can just completely take over your life. All the planning/prep and figuring out logistics takes ample time, but couple that with the actual workout and recovery process, and there goes the whole weekend.

Tomorrow’s workout will be a 3 hour ride followed immediately by a 45 minute run. The ride will include 4 x 20:00 intervals of z3 effort with 5:00 recoveries inbetween.

I’m working through some challenges in my raceday nutrition (GI issues that cause me to not eat/drink as much as I need… or at all). I came up with a couple plans and shared them with my coach to which he shook his head and helped me devise a new plan. In attempting to keep it simple and easy to remember we determined I need to take in something every 15-20 minutes. So, here’s my new plan:

0-30:00 Water Only
30:00 Block w/ Water
45:00 Cytomax
1:00 Block w/ water and 2 Endurolytes
1:15 Cytomax
1:30 Block w/ water
1:45 Cytomax
2:00 Block w/ water and 2 Endurolytes
2:15 Cytomax
2:30 Block w/ water
2:45 Cytomax
3:00 Block water and 2 Endurolytes

Total (6 Blocks and 2 Scoops of Cyto in aero bottle) = 380 calories. Still a little short but some standards, but much better than my original plan.

I had some concerns about that I’d ran out of water (like my last training ride)… during a race, I’ll have aid stations, but not so much on a Saturday ride… So we decided I’d put the Cytomax in my aero bottle and water in my caged bottle. I’m told to drink early, drink often. If I run out, I’ll stop at a convenience store to fill it back up. Good strategy: Don’t be chincy with your water. If there is anything you can pick up mid-ride during training, it’s water!

For the run, I am going to attempt using a FuelBelt for the first time. I have some sort of mental block about running and carrying anything, even if it is on my waist. Coach says I need to try. So try, I will… but I won’t be happy about it :) The FB has 4 bottles, so plan is to fill 2 with cyto and 2 with water.
